YAHOO RELEASES!

Yahoo! Search is taking another step in extending the
Yahoo! Open Strategy with the launch of Yahoo! Search BOSS, a web services platform that allows developers and companies to create and launch web-scale search products by utilizing the same infrastructure and technology that powers Yahoo! Search.

BOSS (Build your Own Search Service) is simple -- foster innovation in the search landscape

What is BOSS?
BOSS is a new, open platform that offers programmatic access to the entire Yahoo! Search index via an AP

  • Ability to re-rank and blend results -- BOSS partners can re-rank search results as they see fit and blend Yahoo!'s results with proprietary and other web content in a single search experience
  • Total flexibility on presentation -- Freedom to present search results using any user interface paradigm, without Yahoo! branding or attribution requirements
  • BOSS Mashup Framework -- We're releasing a Python library and UI templates that allow developers to easily mashup BOSS search results with other public data sources
  • Web, news and image search -- At launch, developers will have access to web, news and image search and we'll be adding more verticals soon
  • Unlimited queries -- There are no rate limits on the number of queries per day
Yahoo is already working on expanding the API functionality and providing more access to Yahoo! Search Technology.

By revealing this new Social Exploration Environment TM (SEE), Me.dium graphically connects users with their friends and others enabling users to interact online, similarly to how one interacts with people in the real world.

Hakia: Semantics Search Engine
Hakia is a general purpose "semantic" search engine, dedicated to quality search experience
hakia is focused on bringing quality results via its semantic search technology. Today's search engines bring popular results via statistical ranking methods. Popular results are not always quality results, and the searchers suffer in many ways ranging from wasted search time to using misleading information.

Cluuz, a next-generation search engine prototype
The difference between standard search engines and Cluuz is in the fact that Cluuz does some work for you. A standard search engine shows links in a list. Cluuz instead peers into the searched web pages, extracts important terms and images, clusters them and gives them in chart format (semantic graph) and in a tag cloud where you can click on any entity to further focus your search:

Yahoo! Slurp 3.0

Yahoo! Slurp 3.0

Latest Yahoo News!

As the new software undergoes a phased rollout to our production crawlers over the next several weeks, you'll see the following changes:

    a) The crawlers will start crawling from a different and much smaller set of IP addresses, but it'll still be from the crawl.yahoo.net domain. Any reverse DNS checks to identify our crawler will continue to work. Please note that if you're using IP-based recognition of our crawlers, you might see a drop in crawl/coverage from Yahoo! We strongly recommend that you move to reverse DNS-based identification of Yahoo! Slurp if you're using any other method to avoid this problem. The current set of IPs will disappear from your web logs in the next several weeks.

    b) The crawlers will also publish a new user-agent, 'Yahoo! Slurp/3.0.' Existing robots.txt directives for 'Slurp' or 'Yahoo! Slurp' will continue to work, but if you have directives specific to 'Slurp/2.0,' they won't be recognized by the new crawler (though usage of the 'Slurp/2.0' user-agent is very rare on the web, so you won't likely be affected). We recommend specifying the shorter version of: User-agent: Slurp.

These changes will affect the main Yahoo! Web Search crawlers. Crawlers that similarly respect the Yahoo! Slurp directive but identify themselves more specifically, such as Yahoo! Slurp China and others, will not be impacted.

Yahoo! Buzz features!

Yahoo buzz - chosen by People

  • The buzz can be about anything - a great story on a major news site, an extraordinary bit from an obscure site, an intriguing video, or a fantastic blog that shouldn't be missed.
  • Instead of editors, people like you determine the top-rated stories.

How does Buzz work?

  • A story is ranked based on its Buzz Score. The score is derived from search term popularity, the number of times a story is emailed from Buzz, and the number of votes a story receives.
  • Stories with the highest Buzz Scores may be published on the Yahoo! home page - you can impact what millions will see on Yahoo!
  • Buzz features the most interesting stories and videos on the Web
  • Content is ranked based on votes, search-term popularity, and what everyone is reading and emailing - right this instant
  • Buzz drives traffic directly to your site to read the full story
  • Users can vote for your content from your site or on Buzz itself

Latest Yahoo! News: Open SEARCH

YAHOO! ROCKS

The open theme continues today as we are announcing that we are opening up Yahoo! Search itself. That's right -- you heard it correctly -- the Yahoo! Search experience will soon be open. This open search platform enables 3rd parties to build and present the next generation of search results. There are a number of layers and capabilities that we have built into the platform, but our intent is clear -- present users with richer, more useful search results so that they can complete their tasks more efficiently and get from "to do" to "done."

Because the platform is open it gives all Web site owners -- big or small -- an opportunity to present more useful information on the Yahoo! Search page as compared to what is presented on other search engines. Site owners will be able to provide all types of additional information about their site directly to Yahoo! Search. So instead of a simple title, abstract and URL, for the first time users will see rich results that incorporate the massive amount of data buried in websites -- ratings and reviews, images, deep links, and all kinds of other useful data -- directly on the Yahoo! Search results page.

Yahoo! Search Content Quality Guidelines

Yahoo! Search Content Quality Guidelines - Yahoo

Original and unique content of genuine value
• Pages designed primarily for humans, with search engine considerations secondary
• Links intended to help people find interesting, related content, when applicable
• Metadata (including title and description) that accurately describes the contents of a web page
• Good web design in general

Unfortunately, not all web pages contain information that is valuable to a user. Some pages are created deliberately to trick the search engine into offering inappropriate, redundant or poor-quality search results; this is often called "spam." Yahoo! does not want these pages in the index.

Yahoo! Considers Unwanted:

Some, but not all, examples of the more common types of content that Yahoo! does not want include:
• Pages that harm accuracy, diversity or relevance of search results
• Pages dedicated to directing the user to another page (doorway pages)
• Multiple sites or pages offering substantially the same content
• Pages that rely heavily on content or links to content created for another web site, such as affiliate content
• Sites with numerous, unnecessary virtual hostnames
• Pages in great quantity, automatically generated or of little value (cookie-cutter pages)
• Pages using methods to artificially inflate search engine ranking
• The use of text or links hidden from the user
• Pages that give the search engine different content than what the end user sees (cloaking)
• Sites cross-linked excessively with other sites to inflate a site's apparent popularity (link schemes)
• Pages built primarily for the search engines or pages with excessive or irrelevant keywords
• Misuse or inaccurate use of competitor or brand names
• Sites that use excessive pop-ups, install malware (i.e. spyware, viruses, trojans), or interfering with user navigation
• Pages that seem deceptive, fraudulent, or provide a poor user experience
