Hakia: Semantics Search Engine
Hakia is a general purpose "semantic" search engine, dedicated to quality search experience
hakia is focused on bringing quality results via its semantic search technology. Today's search engines bring popular results via statistical ranking methods. Popular results are not always quality results, and the searchers suffer in many ways ranging from wasted search time to using misleading information.
Cluuz, a next-generation search engine prototype
The difference between standard search engines and Cluuz is in the fact that Cluuz does some work for you. A standard search engine shows links in a list. Cluuz instead peers into the searched web pages, extracts important terms and images, clusters them and gives them in chart format (semantic graph) and in a tag cloud where you can click on any entity to further focus your search:

Robots Exclusion Protocol for Yahoo!, Google and Microsoft
Robots Exclusion Protocol for Yahoo!, Google and Microsoft
Common REP Directives
The following are all the major REP features currently implemented by Google, Microsoft and Yahoo!. Each of these directives can be specified to be applicable for all crawlers or for specific crawlers by targeting them to specific user-agents, which is how any crawler identifies itself. Each of us also supports Reverse DNS based authentication of our crawler, and you can use this validate the identity of any crawlers claiming a particular user-agent.
1. Robot.txt Directives
| DIRECTIVE | IMPACT | USE CASE(s) |
| Disallow | Tells a crawler not to crawl your site or parts of your site -- your site's robots.txt still needs to be crawled to find this directive, but the disallowed pages will not be crawled. | 'No crawl' pages from a site. This directive in the default syntax prevents specific path(s) of a site from crawling. |
| Allow | Tells a crawler the specific pages on your site you want indexed so you can use this in combination with Disallow. If both Disallow and Allow clauses apply to a URL, the most specific rule - the longest rule - applies. | This is useful in particular in conjunction with Disallow clauses, where a large section of a site is disallowed, except a small section within it. |
| $ Wildcard Support | Tells a crawler to match everything from the end of a URL -- large number of directories without specifying specific pages. | 'No Crawl' files with specific patterns, for eg., files with certain filetypes that always have a certain extension, say pdf; etc. |
| Sitemap Location | Tells a crawler where it can find your sitemaps. | Point to other locations where feeds exist to point the crawlers to the site's content. |
2. HTML META Directives
These directives can either be placed in the HTML of a page or in the HTTP header for non-HTML content like PDF, video, etc. using an X-Robots-Tag. The X-Robots-Tag mechanism allows these directives to be available for all types of documents -- HTML or otherwise. If both forms of the tag, HTML META and X-Robots-Tag in the header are present, the most restrictive one applies.
| DIRECTIVE | IMPACT | USE CASE(s) |
| NOINDEX META Tag | Tells a crawler not to index a given page. | Don't index the page. This allows pages that are crawled to be kept out of the index. |
| NOFOLLOW META Tag | Tells a crawler not to follow a link to other content on a given page. | Prevent publicly writeable areas from being abused by spammers looking for link credit. By NOFOLLOW, you let the robot know that you are discounting all outgoing links from this page. |
| NOSNIPPET META Tag | Tells a crawler not to display snippets in the search results for a given page. | Present no abstract for the page on search results. |
| NOARCHIVE META Tag | Tells a search engine not to show a "cached" link for a given page. | Do not make a copy of the page available to users from the search engine cache. |
| NOODP META Tag | Tells a crawler not to use a title and snippet from the Open Directory Project for a given page. | Do not use the ODP (Open Directory Project) title and abstract for this page in Search. |

Yahoo! Google Deal! News
Today, we announced a non-exclusive advertising agreement that will provide Yahoo! with access to our AdSense for search and AdSense for content advertising programs on their U.S. and Canadian web properties. In addition, we will work to enable interoperability between our respective instant messaging services allowing users better, broader communication online.
It is important to say what this agreement is not:
* This is not a merger. Rather, we are merely providing access to our advertising technology to Yahoo! through our AdSense program.
* This does not remove a competitor from the playing field. Yahoo! will remain in the business of search and content advertising, which gives the company a continued incentive to keep improving and innovating. Even during this agreement, Yahoo! can use our technology as much or as little as it chooses.
* This does not prevent Yahoo! from making similar arrangements with others. This arrangement is not exclusive, meaning that Yahoo! could enter into similar arrangements with other companies.
* This does not increase Google's share of search traffic. Yahoo! will continue to run its own search engine and advertising programs, and the agreement will not increase Google's share of search traffic.
* This does not let Google raise prices for advertisers. Google does not set the prices manually for ads; rather, advertisers themselves determine prices through an ongoing competitive auction. We have found over years of research that an auction is by far the most efficient way to price search advertising and have no intention of changing that.

Microsoft's bid Failed: Yahoo! Rejects Offer
Microsoft's bid Failed:
Microsoft Corp.'s decision to drop its pursuit of Yahoo! Inc. increases the pressure on
Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer to make his money-losing Internet business succeed
against Google Inc.
Ballmer and Kevin Johnson, president of Microsoft's Internet unit, met two days ago in
Seattle with Yahoo co-founders Jerry Yang and David Filo, two people familiar with the
negotiations said. Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft, the largest software maker,
offered to raise its $44.6 billion bid by about $5 billion, to $33 a share. Yang and Filo
refused to accept less than $37 a share, the people said.
Google gained 10 percentage points of market share in Internet queries since June,
providing 59.8 percent of the searches done in March, according to researcher ComScore
Inc. in Reston, Virginia.
ABOUT MICROSOFTS BUYS:
Microsoft has spent $7.5 billion on its Internet unit over the past 2 1/2 years,
estimates Matt Rosoff, an analyst at Kirkland, Washington-based Directions on Microsoft.
The online services business lost $745 million last fiscal year as Google outsold
Microsoft in Internet ads by a 7-to-1 margin.
The company released its AdCenter Internet-advertising service two years ago to challenge
Google with a program that targets ads by age, gender and location. Microsoft also bought
Seattle-based AQuantive Inc. in August for $6 billion to gain tools that help advertisers
track the success of their marketing efforts.

Yahoo! Slurp 3.0
Yahoo! Slurp 3.0
Latest Yahoo News!
As the new software undergoes a phased rollout to our production crawlers over the next several weeks, you'll see the following changes:
- a) The crawlers will start crawling from a different and much smaller set of IP addresses, but it'll still be from the crawl.yahoo.net domain. Any reverse DNS checks to identify our crawler will continue to work. Please note that if you're using IP-based recognition of our crawlers, you might see a drop in crawl/coverage from Yahoo! We strongly recommend that you move to reverse DNS-based identification of Yahoo! Slurp if you're using any other method to avoid this problem. The current set of IPs will disappear from your web logs in the next several weeks.
b) The crawlers will also publish a new user-agent, 'Yahoo! Slurp/3.0.' Existing robots.txt directives for 'Slurp' or 'Yahoo! Slurp' will continue to work, but if you have directives specific to 'Slurp/2.0,' they won't be recognized by the new crawler (though usage of the 'Slurp/2.0' user-agent is very rare on the web, so you won't likely be affected). We recommend specifying the shorter version of: User-agent: Slurp.
These changes will affect the main Yahoo! Web Search crawlers. Crawlers that similarly respect the Yahoo! Slurp directive but identify themselves more specifically, such as Yahoo! Slurp China and others, will not be impacted.

Latest Yahoo! News: Open SEARCH
The open theme continues today as we are announcing that we are opening up Yahoo! Search itself. That's right -- you heard it correctly -- the Yahoo! Search experience will soon be open. This open search platform enables 3rd parties to build and present the next generation of search results. There are a number of layers and capabilities that we have built into the platform, but our intent is clear -- present users with richer, more useful search results so that they can complete their tasks more efficiently and get from "to do" to "done."
Because the platform is open it gives all Web site owners -- big or small -- an opportunity to present more useful information on the Yahoo! Search page as compared to what is presented on other search engines. Site owners will be able to provide all types of additional information about their site directly to Yahoo! Search. So instead of a simple title, abstract and URL, for the first time users will see rich results that incorporate the massive amount of data buried in websites -- ratings and reviews, images, deep links, and all kinds of other useful data -- directly on the Yahoo! Search results page.

Latest Yahoo News - Latest Yahoo! News Updates - Yahoo(Mr. Yang)
Yahoo's update -> Mr. Yang, a cerebral, highly analytic executive who, by all accounts, cares deeply about the company he helped build and its workers, appears to have run out of time to answer those questions. A $44.6 billion bid from Microsoft is once again forcing Mr. Yang and his board to consider the viability of Yahoo as an independent company.
This time, Mr. Yang, 39, faces enormous pressure as he decides whether to try to rescue the company from the clutches of Microsoft, or accept the bid and watch Yahoo become part of Microsoft’s arsenal in its no-holds-barred brawl with Google.
Mr. Yang had quickly set priorities and laid out a precise strategy for making Yahoo more competitive.
Mr. Yang is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley history. He helped build Yahoo from an early directory of Web sites into a sprawling Internet giant that offers services from online dating to e-mail that are used by nearly 500 million people around the globe. His wealth is estimated to top $2 billion.
On Wall Street, patience was running thin. Yahoo shares kept declining, from a high of more than $34 in October to about $24 at the end of the year and a low of $18.58 last week.
“We are still trying to do too many things, and fund them in a way that we need to in order to win,” said a senior executive who has grown disillusioned with Mr. Yang. “With the stock at $24 or $25, we’d be having a very different conversation now. But there were decisions made that were naive that have left us in a position where we can’t control our destiny.”
Mr. Yang himself, at times, suggested that some of the burdens of his new role weighed heavily on him. Speaking to Yahoo advertisers at a conference in October, he described the chief executive job as “lonely.”
Mr. Yang and Ms. Decker were quick to outline Yahoo’s top priorities: becoming a starting point for consumers on the Web, developing technology and relationships to sell ads on Yahoo and other Web sites, and opening up Yahoo to outside programmers and publishers.“As a founder everybody loves you,” he said. “When you become C.E.O., you can tell somewhat the behaviors change.” He later added: “You have to make tough calls.”

Latest Google Yahoo News : Microsoft bid?
Yahoo Inc. is holding out hope that there are ways it can thwart Microsoft Corp.'s unsolicited $44.6 billion takeover offer, including the emergence of a rival bidder or a business tie-up with Google Inc. that might allow it to remain independent, people familiar with the matter say.
Antitrust experts say Google's latitude to do even a business deal with Yahoo is minimal because of likely regulatory concerns. At Microsoft, optimism is growing that the $31-a-share offer for Yahoo that it made public Friday will go through in the absence of rival bids, people ...
Goolge Yahoo News Software Market Update
Business software units of Yahoo Inc and Google Inc are introducing beefed-up versions of their Web-based software that compete with Microsoft Outlook, offering yet another clue why Microsoft Corp made a $45 billion unsolicited bid for Yahoo.
SEARCH Market:
In the search market, a combined Microsoft-Yahoo would have about 33 percent of the market, still trailing Google’s 58 percent,
But in Web-based e-mail, comScore ranks Yahoo, with 256 million visitors worldwide in December, and Microsoft, with 255 million, as the top two providers. While there is bound to be overlap among users of the companies’ e-mail services, a combined Microsoft-Yahoo would command a much larger share than Google, which comScore ranks in third place with 90 million visitors in December.
Yahoo and Microsoft rank
No. 1 and 2 in financial news,
No. 2 and No. 1 in instant messaging
